Why Compost?

Composting is a great way to easily turn organic household waste into something valuable for our gardens. Out of all the waste that goes to our local landfill every year, 26% could have been composted instead! Backyard composting reduces your family's greenhouse gas impact and creates a valuable soil amendment for your garden or flower bed. Want to learn more? Visit our websiteor check out this video!

Why Use a Rain Barrel?

Our city is covered in impermeable surfaces that do not absorb rainwater. Millions of gallons of rainwater run off roofs through downspouts into storm water drains and sewer drains, overloading the combined sewer system almost every time it rains. When the sewer water combines with the rainwater it overflows directly into our local streams and the Ohio River, contaminating those waterways.

By capturing rain water from roofs for local storage, we reduce the amount of water entering the combined sewer system, lessening system overflows and the subsequent contamination of waterways during and directly after these events. Water collected in rain barrels for later use on a lawn or garden provides additional benefits by lowering water costs for residents and providing plants with water that has yet to be filtered for vital nutrients.
